The Only Begotten Son

Welcome back to Mystery Bible as we begin our journey to discuss Jesus the Christ

The Bible calls Jesus BY several different names here are a few of them.

The Only Begotten Son, The WORD, The Son of God, the I AM, Son of Man,

Son of David, The SECOND Adam, The LAMB of GOD, The Prince of Peace,

Wonderful Counselor, Savior of the world, Alpha and the Omega, King of Kings and Lord of Lords and God.

One of his name that I would like to focus on for a few minutes is that of “The Only Begotten Son”

This TERM appears only six times in the bible. John 1:14, John 1:18, John 3:16, John 3:18, Hebrew 11:17-18, I John 4:9.

Hebrew 11:17-18 is about Isaac all the others is about Jesus.  Abraham had two sons and Isaac was the younger of the two boys. So WHY was he called Abraham only begotten son. Could it be that he was the promised son from God, and that Ishmael was produced from the will of man and Isaac was from A PROMISE from God.

God Promises to Give Abraham a Son. (Gen 17:15-17) And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her: yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

From this, we can surmise that this father, son relationship is somewhat different and, unique, special.

Now let us look at the other scriptures that mention Jesus as the Only begotten son. Several questions come to my mind when I read these scriptures.1. what does it mean to when you call Jesus the “Only begotten Son of God:2. When did he became the Only Begotten son?

John 1:14

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

John 1:18

“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 3:18

“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

1 John 4:9

“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”

The term Only Begotten Son is a Greek word a COMPOUND word

(Mono = ONLY Genes=Begotten) used 5 times in the New Testament, in relation to Jesus, 3 times (Luke 7:12; 8:42; 9:38) refers to “only child”. For example, Luke uses the term three times to refer to an only child.

IT CONVEYS one of a kind or unique relationship.

Because of this some modern translations of the bible generally translate Monogenes in John 3:16 as “one and only Son” or “only Son” to reflect this definition.

However, this translation loses the power of what the writer wants to deliver. In relation to Jesus, the Christ. The bible teaches us that God has MANY sons. JN 1:12, JN 3:16, Gal 4:5. The purpose of Jesus dying on the cross was so that God can have more sons.

John 1:12

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

Galatians 4:5

“To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”

The word BEGOTTEN is also mention in Psalm 2:7. This scripture, everyone believes speaks of Jesus the Christ.

We’ll take a short break and will be right back after this message.

Welcome back to Mystery Bible as we begin our journey to discuss Jesus the Christ

Psalms 2:7

“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”

I would be remised, if I did not talk about a teaching that is out there about Jesus was created or made. They base this on several scripture. I Cor:30

1 Corinthians 1:30

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:”

If then Jesus is the wisdom of God then the BOOK OF Proverbs would be an interesting read for example PROVERBS 8-24

21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

23. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

24. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

25. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

26. While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

27. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

28. When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

29. When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

30. Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

31. Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

John 8:42

“Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.”

Col 1:5. States that “Jesus being the image of the invisible God, the first born of ALL CREATION. THE ARGUMENT IS JESUS WAS CREATED FIRST AND THEN HE CREATED EVERYTHING ELSE.

Some have tried to deny the very divinity of Jesus,

Therefore, he cannot be God. That is absurd.

Let us look at these scriptures for ourselves.

READ Col 1-16-18.

15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17And he is before all things, and by him, all things consist.

18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

The emphasis is on Jesus as one in unique relationship with the Father.

The Bible make it very clear. That Jesus is the creator. John 1:1-3 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him, was not anything made that was made.

Now back to Col 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. This statement has caused a some bible teachers to TEACH THAT JESUS TO was CREATED.

Let us look at the context in which this statement was stated.

Colossians 1:15 Context

12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

“No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known

First John 4:9 notes, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

The understanding in these scripture is that Jesus is completely unique, yet not a created being.
